Biodiversity Knowledge Graphs: Time to move up a gear!

چکیده
Harnessing worldwide biodiversity data requires integrating myriad pieces of information, often sparse and incomplete, into a global, coherent space. To do so, projects like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, Catalog Life Encyclopedia have set up platforms that gather, consolidate, centralize billions records from multiple sources. This approach lowers entry barrier for scientists willing to consume aggregated but tends build silos hamper cross-platform interoperability. The Web Data embodies different underpinned by Linked Open (LOD) principles (Heath Bizer 2011). These bring about building large, distributed, cross-domain knowledge graph (KG), wherein description relies on vocabularies with shared, formal, machine-processable semantics. So far however, little been published this way. Early efforts focused primarily taxonomic registers, such as NCBI, VTO AGROVOC. More recent started paving way publication more diverse KGs (Page 2019, Penev et al. Michel 2017). Today, we believe it is time producers join in start publishing connected spanning much broader domains, beyond just registers. Taxonomy shifts up a gear: New publishing tools to accelerate biodiversity research
Biodiversity is under severe threat. It is estimated that there are untold millions of species on the planet and we have, in the past 250 years and recently with a decreasing number of specialists, described only about 2 million of them.Th ough this happens with an agonizing low description rate of an estimated number of 20,000 new species per year (Polaszek et al. 2005), digital and genomic re...

Sensing is a significant contributor to the current mobile computing revolution. Today’s typical smartphone has more than eight sensors, including multiple mics, cameras, accelerometers, gyroscopes, a GPS, a digital compass, and proximity sensors. These sensors not only provide natural user interaction with the device, but also offer tantalizing opportunities for context-aware computing. A rich...

I am sure it is no coincidence that in the year I have turned 40 a new challenge has beckoned. In a few months I shall be heading off to train for a new career. After 20 years, six different universities and four countries it is time to venture beyond the world of higher education. I am not being terribly bold, though, quite the opposite, as I am moving into primary education. Grant application...
متن کاملThe Effect of Teachers' Follow-up Move Approach (F-move) on Iranian EFL Learners' Conversation Quality
The present paper investigated the effect of teacher’s follow‐up move approach on Iranian EFL learners’ conversation quality. Ninety students were selected in a senior high school in Poldokhtar, Iran. Through an oral test sixty out of ninety students whose scores were between one standard deviation (SD) above and below the mean were selected as the participants of the study. Then they were divi...

Cosmology and particle physics have long been dominated by theoretical paradigms: Einstein’s general theory of relativity in cosmology and the Standard Model of particle physics. The time may have come for paradigm shifts. Does cosmological inflation require a modification of Einstein’s gravity? Have experiments at the LHC discovered a new particle beyond the Standard Model? It is premature to ...
